When an island off the coast of Ireland is invaded by bloodsucking aliens, the heroes discover that getting drunk is the only way to survive.

Yes. I watched this movie. Why did I watch this movie? WHY THE HELL DIDN’T I WATCH THIS MOVIE? DID YOU SEE THE TRAILER? I expected a fun silly stupid film about aliens and drunk Irish people and that’s exactly what I got except it was a bit disappointing. It’s as if my mind is mad because the dumb alien movie was good enough. I’m a conflicted person and I’m sorry. Creature features are pretty amazing though. I mean this is really part of the roots of modern cinema. Frankenstein? The Mummy? Nosferatu? War of the Worlds? Cinema is grounded in monsters and aliens and I’m all for the continuation of such films in our culture just as long as they meet my inane and ridiculous needs. This film did a little of that and a little of…ummm, not that.

What I liked…

Like I said in my ramblings this is a fun movie. I guess one if to expect fun when you’re watching a film about blood sucking aliens who are allergic to alcohol so everybody gets wasted to stay alive. The movie lived up to those expectations. For such a low budget movie, the film also had some pretty good CGI. I’m usually a stickler for bad CGI and I had no problem with any of the effects used in this film. The movie is also half comedy and the words I could make up (this is an Irish movie after all) were funny and entertaining. Honestly I can’t say anything more positive other than if you like aliens killing things then you’re going to like this film.

What I didn’t like…

This is where the cinephile in me tends to ruin things. As much as I love fun and whacky movies, I can’t help but pick out the negatives in narrative and pacing of the movie. It’s like I expect every single horror comedy to end up like Cabin in the Woods and I get upset that they don’t. These are negatives but like I said are in no way detracting from the fact that this is a fun movie that is what it is. That being said I didn’t enjoy the pacing in this. There were some pretty big lumps of time that are lost because there is not enough jokes and not enough aliens killing things. Most of this has to do with the notion that the aliens in the film are basically allergic to booze which is a very unique idea but just wasn’t utilized well in the film. There was also the dreaded “totally not needed romantic element” that is ALWAYS used in these types of films. You have the edgy cop meeting the uptight woman cop and LIFT OFF. We have a romance. It’s just a cliche that I’m getting tired of.

So, lets wrap this up. Aliens. Irish people drinking. Aliens. Salty sea captains. F’IN ALIENS.

3/5
